Spend even a few seconds looking at the work of Jorge R. Gutierrez and it becomes pretty clear you’re entering his world, not the other way around. Skeletons dance, wrestlers pose dramatically, colors explode across the canvas, and somewhere in the middle of it all there’s usually a big grin hiding underneath the chaos.
Born in Tijuana, Mexico and creating between Mexico and Los Angeles, Jorge has built a visual universe fueled by Mexican folk art, pop culture, cartoons, religion, comics, monsters, music, sports, and just about anything else that captures his imagination. His work feels deeply rooted in Mexican culture, but never boxed in by it. There are influences from everywhere—Asia, Europe, the United States—all colliding together inside Mexopolis.
A lot of people first discovered Jorge through projects like The Book of Life or El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, but painting seems to operate a little differently for him. The animation work may involve studios, productions, and giant teams of people, but the paintings feel closer to pure play. Like sketchbooks turned loose with no rules.
That freedom is part of what makes the work feel so alive. Nothing about it feels overly careful or polished for approval. The paintings bounce between funny, strange, nostalgic, loud, heartfelt, messy, and deeply personal sometimes all at once. One minute you’re looking at fútbol inspired folk imagery, the next minute there’s a demon, a luchador, or a glowing skeleton staring back at you. Somehow it all still feels connected.
Right now Jorge is preparing for his upcoming solo exhibition, FUTBOL! FUTBOL!! FUTBOL!!!, opening July 3 at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Hollywood, California. Which honestly feels pretty perfect considering how much joy, movement, spectacle, and community already exist inside his work.
