For Miguel Castillo, art begins with the coast. The rhythm of daily life, the warmth of nature, the culture of seaside communities, and the energy of the people around him all flow directly into his work. Based in Cancún, Mexico, Miguel creates murals and paintings that blend cultural identity with the vibrant atmosphere of coastal living, always aiming to leave viewers with a sense of joy and connection.
That emotional response is important to him. More than anything, Miguel hopes his work creates a smile. Whether painting large scale public murals or smaller works, he approaches each piece with the intention of bringing warmth, energy, and familiarity into the spaces people move through every day.
Nature continues to play a major role throughout his work, especially alongside the traditions and lifestyles found in Mexico’s coastal regions. Rather than separating culture from environment, Miguel constantly searches for ways to merge the two together visually. The result is artwork that feels colorful, alive, and deeply rooted in place.
One of the projects that created the strongest reaction from the public was Los Tecuanes Acapulqueños, a massive 23 meter mural painted in the port city of Acapulco. The mural combined the cultural identity of Guerrero with the lifestyle and spirit of the Acapulco community, creating a work that resonated strongly with local viewers.
That connection with people continues to motivate Miguel to keep creating. While he says he is never fully sure how his work will impact others, hearing those reactions directly from the public becomes fuel to continue painting and evolving as an artist.
